All charges are normally invoiced at 30 days net. If you've never made any sort of payment to PIR before (such as the membership fee), we will give you an estimate and wait for payment.
Fast fax of the original (20 pages maximum): Faxes often require resizing, cut-and-paste, and recopying so that the page can be fed to the machine. This is billed at $20 per hour plus ten cents per page, which is our normal photocopying charge. But there is also a 50 percent surcharge on this because faxes get immediate attention. The photocopies that are faxed will also be mailed with the invoice for no extra charge (U.S. only; outside U.S. you have to request this and pay for postage). From the time we first see the order, fax turn-around is about two hours. You also pay for our call; here's a rough guide to what our phone company charges us per minute (fax speed averages one page per minute):
- U.S, Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico $. 35 / page
- Western Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand $. 50 / page
- Russia, Eastern Europe, Central and South America $.75 - $1 / page
- former USSR countries, Africa, Asia $1 - $2 / page
Fairly fast and less expensive -- a manually-generated summary returned by e-mail: This is billed at $20 per hour; two pages might take about 15 minutes, and cost $5. We recommended this method if you aren't sure the material is worth the cost of a fax, but you can't wait a week for air mail copies. You should specify a ceiling for what you want to spend on the summary if it's a lot of pages. If the original is sufficiently sharp, and a summary would take longer, we may just e-mail the unproofed text output from OCR software. We start on it immediately unless someone else's fax order is pending.

Not so fast -- air mailing of photocopies: Billed at $20 per hour plus ten cents per page, plus postage. The time required is for pulling and refiling, and feeding odd sizes and bound book pages to our machine. The copying is faster than it is for fax setup, because size and resolution don't affect legibility, and dark spines and edges are left alone. It's at our post office the next day. Air mail is approximately $.15 - $.20 per page, if you assume a 10-page minimum. U.S. orders are sent first class unless you want to pay for next-day Express Mail (we don't do Federal Express). It usually takes a week for air mail, printed matter, to reach Europe from our post office.
