Briarpatch Magazine, Huston House, 2138 McIntyre Street, Regina SK, Canada S4P 2R7, Tel: 306-525-2949. $25/year (10 issues).

Founded in 1973, Briarpatch Magazine is another populist voice from Canada's prairies. Whereas many of its left-leaning sister publications in the U.S. long ago adopted a garrison-state mentality, Briarpatch still seems to assume that there's a sympathetic audience out there somewhere -- even among some politicians. Recent issues have lectured local New Democratic Party politicians about their latest budget's unnecessary concessions to the private sector. The budget of the nonprofit Briarpatch, meanwhile, seems to stay in balance because of the many volunteer writers (e.g., a teenager's recent memoir of his involvement with local racist skinheads), local advertising, and many small contributions. Each month, contributors are listed inside the magazine's front cover, along with such touches as a notice inviting readers (please RSVP) to the magazine's annual general meeting at a Regina restaurant.
